Nintendo’s New Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Trailer Is So Sad

There are all kinds of demographics that will take it to the next level. Zelda game, but this new trailer Tears of the KingdomSomeone somewhere between a personal appeal and a personal attack on me, a 43-year-old man, has a very specific audience in mind.

Kids will buy it. Teenagers, young adults, this is a new Zelda game, all of these people pre-ordered the game (or annoyed their parents to pre-order) months ago. But old players? This is a different story. Older players have jobs. They may have a big house, they may have a family, they may have other things to do instead of playing video games all the time.

Sure, they can have a Switch and Zelda At one point—perhaps as recently as 2017!—but that was six years ago and times are changing. For example, in 2017 I was 37 years old and had two kids and was working on a video game site. In 2023 I… Okay, it’s a bad example, but Nintendo’s target is going to be a lot of people who aren’t very interested in this game. Zelda because they were the last.

There are two ways to read this trailer. The first is the way its creators and Nintendo clearly intended; this guy with a boring job and a boring middle-aged life, can still find some joy in this world. And he can find it by staying up late playing video games.
