Saturday April Fools’ Day. So, as usual, companies post joke trailers and “funny” tweets here. But then there’s Sega, which has released a brand new, completely free, actually real murder mystery game on Steam. Sonic the Hedgehog. This is how the April Fools’ Fool is done, folks. Also: Wow.
Released today on Steam at the perfect price of zero dollars and cents, The Killing of Sonic the Hedgehog It is a short mystery game in which popular characters from the Sonic series work together to figure out: Who killed Sonic the Hedgehog? I mean, I know 3D games have been a bit bad for years and fans can be annoying, but I don’t think the blue blur deserves to be caught, you know?
In a trailer released March 31, Sega added that it has heard all the feedback from players and is excited to “announce” Sonic is dead, proudly boasting that its next game will take the franchise in a “brave new direction.”
According to the game’s Steam page– which I must emphasize again, it’s real and it exists – Sega says the game takes place on Amy Rose’s birthday. He’s throwing a mysterious murder party on the Mirage Express. Sonic ends up being the first victim, but “something feels a little wrong,” according to the game’s description. “Is it really an innocent game or is something more sinister going on?”
Sega says players may question some of their “favorite characters” as they try to figure out who killed Sonic and why. The game features completely hand-drawn landscapes and character art. But, The Killing of Sonic the Hedgehog Not developed by Sonic Team, as noted on the game’s Steam page. So don’t think about this official rule, Unlike when Sonic kisses a woman. Or do it. What do I care? i am not your father
While most April Fools’ Day jokes aren’t bad and funny, I’ll credit Sega for this one: Killing Sonic and making a game about it is a very good piece. Bravo.
