Microsoft has Halo, Nintendo has Super Mario Bros. even Sega has Sonic the Hedgehog should they ever wish to return to the console space (although don’t hold your breath). Like it or lump it every major home console has a dedicated franchise in which they can tip their hat and be proud of. Yet earlier this year back in 2016 Sony ended their popular Uncharted series with a very definitive full stop, leaving every PlayStation fan wondering “What is PlayStation’s next Uncharted?”

In order to reassure those worrying, we at IGCritic have put together this list of upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusives, each having the potential to re-invent the way we play games similar to the way Naughty Dog previously did. Almost all of these games had some sort of presence at this year’s E3, giving us a better idea at which exclusive has the potential to next fill this void, so let’s dive in to see who has the potential to stand equally next to the likes of Master Chief and Mario.

  1. The Order 1886 sequel

The Order: 1886 sequel

Buy The Order: 1886

Beautiful, atmospheric and dripping in a world full of history, when The Order 1886 released earlier this year it’s short length, muddled story and lack of replay ability didn’t help to solidify itself as a franchise that would have staying power – yet this doesn’t mean that its sequel cannot! Ready at Dawn is a studio that consists of a team full of potential, doing great work with another beloved franchise that might appear on this list.

We’re almost certain that a sequel to the underrated werewolf slayer is in the works and if the gameplay is overhauled, we could be looking at PlayStation’s next landmark series. With a great cast of characters, beautiful world and a mythical lore that has so many more stories to be told, The Order 1886’s sequel could undergo a renaissance similar to the Assassin’s Creed series.

  1. Days Gone

Buy Days Gone

Finally revealed by Bend studio at this year’s E3 press conference, Days Gone represents 4 long hard years of work since the first party studio’s last game. What gives this particular game a hope of being PlayStation’s next Uncharted, is the fact that Bend’s previous game was actually a prequel to the first Uncharted that appeared on the PS Vita.

These guys know how to tell a story in a game that has tight mechanics and interesting traversal, let’s just hope it does enough different from Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us to keep us from experiencing severe zombie fatigue.

  1. Detroit: Become Human

Buy Detroid: Become Human

Although at first glance you might not think of a Quantic Dream game as having the potential to be PlayStation’s next Uncharted, yet Detroit: Become Human has the luxury of featuring multiple playable characters and as such has nothing stopping it from becoming an anthology series.

The popularity of Until Dawn earlier this year, definitely indicates that audiences have a specific craving for these sorts of games where in it your choices matter, this looks to be Detroit: Become Human’s bread and butter, giving it a great chance of spawning more sequels or spin offs.

  1. HellBlade

Buy HellBlade: Senua’s Sacrifice

Considered by many to be the spiritual successor to Ninja Theory’s Heavenly Sword, HellBlade looks to be somewhere in-between a Triple-A and an indie game that will place large emphasis on brutal and satisfying melee combat the studio has now become known for.

It’s been a little quiet as of late with regards to updates on HellBlade’s development, yet what we do know so far is that it will focus on protagonist Senua‘s personal journey through a hellish world as she begins to explore the manifestations that exist in her mind as well as reality. Intrigued? You should be! HellBlade has the potential to surprise us all and therefore could be PlayStation’s next Uncharted.

  1. Spider-Man

Buy Spider-Man

Everyone’s favourite neighbourhood Spider-Man surprised us all at this year’s E3 2016 press conference, not least because it turned out that it’s being developed by one of the industry’s most talented developers in Insomniac. Believe it or not, the new Spider-Man game is a PS4 exclusive and therefore has the potential to make Marvel’s web-slinging icon the new face of PlayStation.

Insomniac has already proved that they can create a series that is easily capable of infecting everyone’s heart with their work on the Ratchet & Clank series of games, let’s hope they can do it again. Admittedly what we’ve seen from the trailer so far does show us some elements we’ve seen previously from older Spider-Man games (who doesn’t remember lifting off the roof of a car), but the traversal with be smooth, fun and so far, Insomniac and Marvel gave been saying all the right things!

  1. God of War

Buy God of War

Less angry with more beard and even his own child this time around, God of War has always been cherished by many as one of Sony’s beloved franchises, being somewhat overtaken by the Uncharted series in terms of notoriety during the PS3 generation. With a new over-the-shoulder perspective and a more visceral less-arcadey battle-system, the new God of War is essentially a complete re-invention of the franchise that is new enough to undergo a complete resurgence.

It’s been revealed that the game is most definitely a continuation that leads on from the previous three main series instalments, showing us a different side to this consistently angry character which gives it the chance for us to better connect with its central character – similar to how we feel about Nathan Drake in Uncharted.
