With the 2015 instalment of Ratchet & Clank released to massive critical acclaim and praise, it seems appropriate to highlight one of the most prominent features the series is now known for. I am of course talking about the awesome Ratchet & Clank weapons!
Since the release of the original Ratchet & Clank in 2002, there has been guns-a-plenty to help keep us entertained and engaged as we plough throughout the farthest reaches of the galaxy with our favourite Lombax and Warbot. From one-liner robot companions to sphere shooting guns that provoke enemies to irresistibly dance, Ratchet & Clank has become synonymous with quirky weapons you won’t find anywhere else, all of which are a blast to use.
Here are just some of many best Ratchet & Clank weapons we find the most memorable and fun to play with when we are crushing our enemies!
Glove of Doom / Agents of Doom
Games appeared: Ratchet & Clank, Up Your Arsenal, Size Matters and Ratchet & Clank (2016)
There’s something quite satisfying in knowing that when taking on hoards of the blarg, warbots or any other enemy that you’ve always got backup. Ratchet & Clank’s Glove of Doom works by simply shooting out a series of tiny robots that immediately swarm to any nearby enemy before blowing up. Great for crowd control and immensely satisfying to use, the little Agents of Doom that fly out never fail to come in handy on your journey to save the universe.
The more Glove of Doom / Agents of Doom is upgraded, the more minions you receive to do your bidding. Whenever you find yourself swarmed by the enemy or simply want to sacrifice some artificial life, the Glove of Doom (also called the Apocolypse Glove once upgraded) is the best way to indulge in this chaotic form of warfare.
Games appeared: Ratchet & Clank Into the Nexus
Maybe somewhat of a left-field choice, the Nightmare Box has only since appeared in one Ratchet & Clank game, but by golly did it make an impression simply by doing what it does on the tin. Once deployed, the Nightmare Box instantly reduces your enemy to the child they were before by showing them a ghost or goblin from a parallel universe, leading them to cower in fear accordingly.
Once upgraded the Nightmare Box appropriately earns the name of Terroriser, surrounding your enemies with said creatures to allow you a gratifying free shot. Truly a unique and memorable weapon, it’s hopeful we’ll see it in a future instalment of the Ratchet & Clank series.
Games appeared: Tools of Destruction, Crack in Time, Full Frontal Assault, Ratchet & Clank Into the Nexus and Ratchet & Clank (2016)
Admit it, we all like to break down and bust-a-move from time to time, but maybe whilst you’re invading the galaxy isn’t the best time to do so. This is what makes up the beauty of the Groovitron Glove which works simply by shooting a disco ball into the sky, and immediately forcing your enemies to dance in unison.
It isn’t all fun and games though! Despite the inherently hilarious nature of the weapon’s effect, the Groovitron Glove has established itself within the series as an ideal way to get a free shot against your enemies. Although some may see it as a form of support as opposed to a weapon that inflicts any damage, the Groovitron Glove is a memorable part of any Ratchet armoury and by far one of the most enjoyable to see play out! Unfortunately, the Groovitron had an effect on me as well as I would dance along with the enemies and enjoy the moment which makes this weapon earn its spot as one of the best Ratchet & Clank weapons throughout the whole series.
Games appeared: Too many to count
It’s become a bit of a standard within the series, to have a weapon which gratifyingly transforms any alien enemy into a familiar farm animal native to our own planet. Whether it’s the Sheepinator, Quack-o-ray or Armoogeddon, almost every Ratchet game is sure to give you this very satisfying ability.
Any morph gun you are able to wield perfectly encapsulates the wacky and off-the-wall nature Ratchet & Clank has become known for and as such, seemed silly to list them all separately. Every variation of the morph gun is sure to grant you with an immense feeling of satisfaction, as even the bulkiest and more menacing of enemies are reduced to a ridiculous farm animal right before your eyes.
Games appeared: Ratchet & Clank, Going Commando, Up Your Arsenal, Tools of Destruction, Crack in Time, Into the Nexus and Ratchet & Clank (2016)
Acting as the weapon all other weapons strive to be, the RYNO (Rip You a New One) is a gun that has been iterated upon multiple times in the series, being the end game gun every Lombax should never find himself without. Known within the universe as one of the most power weapons ever developed, the RYNO is expensive but is worth every bolt.
The gun actually has fluctuated between games as to how it actually operates, in earlier iterations the RYNO would launch a series of highly-volatile missiles whilst in others it shoots out powerful energy blasts. No matter what variant of the RYNO you find yourself using, it’s sure to come packed with massive amounts of ammo and as such is perfect for “Ripping Your enemies a New One”.
Games appeared: Tools of Destruction, A Crack in Time, Into the Nexus and Ratchet & Clank (2016)
Firmly establishing itself as a fan-favourite weapon within the series, no modern Ratchet & Clank game is complete without the addition of Mr. Zurkon. Largely boiling down to a robot companion that simply shoots any enemy to be found in sight, there’s a certain charm to Mr. Zurkon that is thankfully improved by witty puns or one-liners he’s sure to spout.
Classic lines include: “Mr. Zurkon’s currency is pain”, “Yooh-hoo Mr. Zurkon is looking to kill you” and “Death is too stupid for Mr. Zurkon”, all of which make him the second best companion to have with you after Clank. In later instalments he’s even introduced his sons to the family business of shooting anything that moves, just be sure never to anger his Mrs!
The truth is no matter what entry of the series you find yourself battling in, there’s never a dull weapon to be found. Good Luck galactic ranger, captain Quark’s counting on you!
