While some Xbox Live gamers will roll their eyes when they hear the term “free-to-play”, it’s not necessarily the right reaction. Sure, some F2P Xbox Live games that use this business model are built around microtransactions and want to milk players for every dollar they have, but that’s not always the case.

Microsoft showed that there are exceptions with it’s free-to-play game Killer Instinct that came with the Xbox One Launch, and since then the Xbox One Live platform has built a solid lineup of F2P Xbox Live games for all of its Xbox Live members to enjoy.

So, if you are looking to for a free-to-play game on the Xbox One then look no further.  Here are 7 Xbox One games that are currently free-to-play and available to members in the Xbox Store.

World of Tanks

World of Tank on a battlefield

Wargaming’s tank combat MMO game, which is fittingly called World of Tanks, is a surprisingly popular hit among Xbox One gamers. Once you actually play World of Tanks, you’ll be less surprised as the player vs. player gameplay is extremely satisfying. Whether you have a love for 20th-century armoured vehicles or not, head over to the Xbox store and give this free-to-play Xbox One game a go.

If there’s one genre that seems ill-suited for console gaming it’s MOBAs, yet that hasn’t stopped developer Hi-Rez Studios from creating a stellar offering on Xbox One. By shifting the Smite console game to a third person perspective, they’ve made their “MOBA” feel familiar to console players, whilst keeping it challenging and entertaining for genre veterans. This F2P Xbox One game has the perfect mixture of action and strategy and is most definitely worth a download from the Xbox Store.

While Digital Extremes’ Warframe was a launch title for PlayStation 4, it took quite some time for the third-person online action game to make its way to Xbox One. It was worth the wait, though, as it delivers polished combat with a loot grind that will keep you coming back for more. Warframe continues to get additional content added to it, so there’s never been a better time to jump into this F2P sci-fi game.

Killer Instinct

Killer Instinct is proof that the free-to-play model can be successfully applied to established genres. The free version of Killer Instinct allows Xbox players to check out Iron Galaxy’s top-notch fighting game, and view all of the game’s modes with whatever Killer Instinct fighter is free that month. There are no microtransactions, just additional characters that players can buy if they want to experience more. It’s a perfect fit for the fighting genre, and who doesn’t want to buy Rash from Battletoads?

neverwinter dragon spewing fire

This free-to-play MMORPG set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe offers up a compelling world filled with quests to fulfil. Cryptic Studios has done a great job of keeping the game feel fresh by adding new expansions (9 and counting at this point) which add new classes and quests for Neverwinter players to check out. Just know that you might end up losing a lot of hours to the addictive experience!

Created by the mind behind the highly successful Puzzle Quest series, Gems of War is a new puzzle game that has RPG trappings. Players will trigger dangerous spells and attacks by matching 3 same coloured icons, and the combat provides a unique twist on the puzzle genre. There’s a lot to like here, especially if you have enjoyed creator Steve Fawkner’s past work.

While it won’t cost a dime to purchase any of these 7 F2P Xbox One titles, there’s still plenty of fun to be had for Xbox One players.
