Toxic behavior has always been one of the biggest problems in game communities, especially multiplayer games. Instead of enjoying some good ol’ gaming, we’d end up wanting to unplug our gaming platforms because of the people in-game who just can’t seem to play nicely. LoL players have especially dealt with this kind of behaviour in the past and still deal with it today. Riot’s fantasy MOBA title, League of Legends continues to its growth and with it the amount of players with toxic attitude.
Luckily, Riot Games has been dealing with these players through a system which allows players to send them reports of negative player behavior called the Tribunal System. These reports are then manually checked by Riot Games moderators to ensure that players are rightfully accused and sanctioned accordingly. Unfortunately, this system is becoming more and more of a challenge to maintain with the immense growth in number of players and with that Tribunal System reports.
Riot Games have proposed alternative methods, one being the reform system (An automated system similar to their Tribunal system which sends in-game notifications to players who have been reported as toxic), restricts chat messages, restricts ranks and delivers a ban where required. Last year, Riot Games even withheld season rewards to those caught being toxic. These punishments aim to cleanse the LoL community from its cloud of poison.
Whilst, these punishments aim to cleanse the LoL community from its cloud of poison, Riot has also taken a stance of positive reinforcement. Psychological studies have shown that punishment does not promote good behaviour long-term, whilst continued rewards do.
Riot Games will implement a rewards system called the Hextech crafting and Loot
For each game, players will be able to receive drops of loot which can be crafted into different items such as LoL skins, wards, summoner icons, and even champions! So far, this system has gotten positive feedback from the LoL community, and Riot Games plans on keeping the positivity alive.
We really want the system to be a reward. It’s a new carrot for playing with friends and for being a positive player in the game. We’ve never been able to give skins for free before in League of Legends, so this is our way of saying, ‘Hey, if you’re a positive player in the game, here’s your way of earning something just for playing the game and being awesome.
Moreover, in order to battle out Toxic behavior, Riot Games plans to lock out players who have repeatedly been reported as negative or toxic. Riot’s Lead game designer of Social Systems, Jeffrey Lin, mentioned that it was going to be a risky move to deny certain players from an entire system but they’re willing to take it in order to clean up the mess.
