It’s been three years since Star Wars director J.J. Abrams and Valve CEO Gabe Newell indicated their interest in collaborating together in a possible Half-Life movie. But after that event, no news of any possible work progress between them has been released.
During DICE 2013, the two mentioned wanting to create game adaptations, special mentioning Valve’s Half-Life and Portal series. The engagement between the two of them started when J.J. Abrams had approached Gabe Newell saying that they had a game idea which they wanted to work with Valve. Gabe Newell happily responded, mentioning that they too wish to work with J.J. Abrams and create adaptions for their games (heck yes for a Half-Life movie!).
“We’re going to figure out if we can make a Portal movie or Half-Life movie together.” – Gabe Newell, CEO at Valve.
J.J. Abrams has finally broken the silence. In an interview with IGN on 10 Cloverfield Lane, Abrams has confirmed that the Portal and Half-Life movie adaptations aren’t dead. He mentioned that both games are currently being worked on but there isn’t much that he can say beyond this. During the interview, Abrams was asked if he could give any updates on the production for Portal and Half-Life movie and said:
“Not yet, but they’re in development. And we’ve got writers, and we’re working on both those stories. But nothing that would be an exciting update.”
We can assume from his statement that the scripts for Portal and Half-Life’s film adaptations are being presently being worked on. Other than the news we got from J.J. Abrams about the two movies having writers for their scripts and story, not much else has been said regarding their progress. But still, this little insider from J.J Abrams confirms that the adaptations are still alive. Let’s not give up just yet! If fans were hoping for a Half-Life 3 PS4 game, unfortunately, we have to disappoint you on that one!
