19. The Neighborhood
Throughout the years, Hefta has continued to deliver mail to the same neighborhood. He has grown acquainted with the people in the neighborhood and has become a familiar face to everyone. This friendly attitude allows the postman to better deliver the mail.
18. One Woman
While doing the rounds, Hefta became introduced to one woman in particular. Her name is Alice Paschke and she is a 94-year-old resident of the area where Hefta delivers the mail. The two quickly bonded.

The old woman would often lament to Hefta about how difficult it was for her to get up and get the mail out of the mailbox. Hearing this, Hefta decided that he would go out of his way to make things easier for the elderly woman. So what did he choose to do?
16. Special Delivery
Instead of placing her mail inside of the mailbox, Hefta decided to make the extra effort. He would knock on the old woman’s door and personally deliver the mail to her. “Alice was just a nice lady, and she lived out there by herself,” Hefta told WDAZ-TV.

14. Strange Occurrence
On a cold day in January, Hefta was delivering mail as usual and had walked over to Alice’s door like he usually would. He knocked on the door and waited for her to open it. However, she never came to the door…

Hefta decided to knock on the door again. Still, there was no response from Alice. He was confused but didn’t think much of it. After all, maybe she just wasn’t home. That was when he heard something strange.
12. A Cry
It was then when Hefta heard something that sounded like a faint cry. He put his ear to the door and began to listen more closely. He then realized that he was indeed hearing a cry for help!
11. A Decision
“I didn’t really know what to do, I didn’t know if I could break a door open,” Hefta said. Then Hefta decided that he had to do something so he tried to break open the door. “I hit it pretty good twice, and it popped right open. Adrenaline, I guess.”
10. Horrific Situation
Once Hefta opened the door he found poor Alice on the floor, crying out for help. She had been lying on the floor for 20 hours and could not get up. Alice knew that her only chance at survival would be alerting Hefta when he would deliver the mail.
9. Calling Out
Alice recounted how she called out to Hefta in her quiet, faint voice. “I says, ‘Come in.’ I says, ‘I need help,’” she recalled. “He saved my life. And that’s a true story… I thought I was in heaven already.” Alice’s family is eternally grateful to Hefta…
8. Heroic Efforts
In order to honor Hefta and his heroic efforts he was awarded the Postmaster General Award. This award is one of the highest honor’s that a post officer could receive. Then there was another huge honor that Hefta was allowed to partake in.
On top of his award, Hefta also received another great honor. Hefta’s name was engraved on the Heroes Wall at the Washington headquarters. Hefta was blown away by all of these great awards and couldn’t believe it.
“I’m quite honored actually. I’ve never had anything like this happen to me. Pretty big honor,” Hefta said, stunned. Hefta couldn’t believe that he was getting honored in such a great way. So how is Alice doing these days?
5. Doing Better
Although Alice is doing much better since her fall she no longer lives alone in her house. She has since moved into a nursing home where she has people around to care for her 24/7. She is still so grateful to Hefta for how he saved her life.
4. Forever Remembering
“Just a good mailman, and I can’t forget him… For the rest of my life, for as long as my memory works, I’m going to remember,” Alice said. Although it was a triumphant act on Hefta’s part it wasn’t totally unexpected when you find out this one thing.
For those that may not know, the post office actually trains its postmen in more than just delivering mail. Hefta was actually trained on how to check on more vulnerable members of the community. So does Hefta ever see Alice anymore?
Now that Alice isn’t part of Hefta’s daily route that hasn’t stopped him from seeing her. Hefta will go out and visit Alice at the nursing home whenever he has the chance. Alice looks forward to these visits very much.
1. Amazing Man
Thanks to Hefta’s heroic efforts, Alice is still alive and enjoying her life. It is amazing to see humans help each other out in the most phenomenal ways.
