This Is What Happens When A Wild Wolf And A Pet Dog Meet Face-to-Face
It’s no big secret that although wolves and dogs come from the same species they are incredibly different in more ways than one. Wolves are wild creatures and they rely on their instincts to survive out in the wild. So when one man’s dog decided to go out and greet a wolf in their backyard, the man was immediately worried about his dog’s life. You won’t believe how the wolf reacted…
Although a wolf and a dog might look similar at first glance, there are a ton of differences that separate the two. For one, a dog is a domesticated animal that we keep as a pet and wolves, on the other hand, are wild and unpredictable.
19. Maintaining Distance
That’s why, whenever you see a wolf around, it is important to maintain a safe distance. Wolves are very territorial and will go to great lengths to protect themselves and their packs. You wouldn’t want to be the person they’re protecting their pack from!
Nick Jans is an Alaskan wildlife photographer, so he had a basic understanding of just how dangerous a wolf could be. After all, he was constantly photographing them. However, it wasn’t until an incident in 2003 when he realized just how complicated wolves really are.
17. Wild Wolf
Nick was out in his backyard in Juneau, Alaska with his dog when a wild wolf appeared. Excited to see another animal, Nick’s dog quickly ran over to the wolf without a moment’s notice. Nick immediately grew fearful…
16. Remain Calm
From his experience documenting wolves, Nick knew that the best tactic was to always maintain a distance and keep calm. However, his dog had completely broken all of those rules! The dog had run right up to the wolf with no hesitation.
15. Confusing Situation
Nick knew that in order to stay safe he had to keep away from the wolf. But, now with his dog right in front of the wolf’s face Nick didn’t know what to do next. That was when the wolf reacted and Nick was shocked!
14. Playing Around
Instead of attacking his Labrador, the wolf started to play with the dog. Nick was blown away by the situation as he had never seen anything like it before. He had no idea that this wouldn’t be the last he’d see of this playful wolf.
The wolf continued to come back to play every single day. His presence became a regular thing and Nick eventually named the wolf, Romeo. However, Romeo was still looking for more pals!
Soon, everyone throughout the town began to recognize Romeo. Romeo would often go up to the neighborhood dogs and play with them. He was known for showing up at the nearby Mendenhall Glacier Park.
11. Gentle Wolf
Even though Romeo was so much bigger than a lot of the dogs, none of them were scared of him. He was so gentle and kind when he played with them. Even the most shy and timid dogs would look forward to playing around with Romeo.
At first, many of the residents were nervous about letting their dog play with a wolf. However, when they saw how Romeo interacted with the other dogs they soon warmed up to him as well. Everyone quickly understood that Romeo was unlike the typical wolf.
Romeo didn’t like to just play with the dogs either. He loved getting the residents of the town involved as well. “The wolf would bring out toys that he’d stashed,” Nick revealed in an interview.
“One was a Styrofoam float,” Nick said. “One was a Styrofoam float,” Nick continued. “Romeo would pick it up and bring it to [my friend] Harry to throw. He clearly understood the same sort of behaviors that we see in dogs.”
“The amazing thing was Romeo’s understanding,” Nick explained. “It wasn’t just our understanding and tolerance. It was the combination of his and ours and the dogs.” It seems that Romeo was trying to figure out how to get along with everyone else just as much as they were with him!
“We were these three species working out how to get along harmoniously,” Nick said. “And we did.” Amazingly, these three different species all managed to get along perfectly!
Romeo stuck around in Juneau for the next six years. He became a real symbol in the town and was considered an ambassador in the community. Everyone would always look forward to his appearance and his playful antics.
Eventually, almost everyone in the community embraced Romeo. They all loved his sweet-nature and his love of playing around. He was truly everyone’s friend. Unfortunately, he didn’t stay in the community after the sixth year…
3. Passing Away
Sadly, Romeo ended up passing away in 2010. Wild animals do not have the same life expectancy as domesticated ones as they have more tumultuous lives. Still, everyone worked hard to honor Romeo and his legacy.
The town held a memorial for the wolf and they even made a special plaque in his honor. Everyone’s lives was touched by Romeo and they all wanted to honor the amazing wolf. The town would never be the same again without his presence.
Romeo taught everyone in the town a wonderful lesson around coexistence. Romeo was able to peacefully play with everyone and in turn everyone accepted him as well. It is truly an inspiring tale.
