celebrating pokemon anniversary 20 years pickachu and others jumping

We’re still finding it hard to believe that it’s been twenty years since the first Pokémon video games came out on the original Game Boy. Twenty. Years.

Luckily for us, Nintendo is celebrating Pokémon’s 20th birthday in 2016 with a spread of goodies for trainers the world over!

To kick off the celebrations, The Pokémon Company has revealed a video showcasing all the good stuff we’ll be getting over the course of the coming months. Starting February 16th, Nintendo will be giving away mythical Pokémon to Pokémon X, Y, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire players monthly. Catch Celebi, Victini, and Mew among the other legendaries shown in the video!

Players who haven’t gotten a Nintendo 3DS yet might want to look out for the commemorative Pokémon Nintendo 3DS bundle being released, which promises the digital versions of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue games pre-installed. You get Blastoise and Charizard cover plates on the side too, which we think are super fetching. These will be available starting February 27th.

Additionally, Europe will be receiving three different types of Nintendo 2DS bundles: Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow. These will be dropping on European shores on February 27th. They are also releasing two brand new cover plates for the new 3DS, in Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon and classic Pokémon sprites variations. The former will be available in Europe on February 19th, and the latter on February 27th.

Fans who are more into the Pokémon trading card game can look forward to the release of the special Generations TCG expansion- the booster packs shown in the video have first-gen classics Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur on them, so this will most likely be a set that will tickle your nostalgia bone. We’re also getting Mythical Pokémon TCG Collections, which will feature a different promo card each month.

Now I’m sure most of us have grown up alongside Ash Ketchum, even if he stays ten-years-old forever while the rest of us get older. We all know the original Pokémon movies, and no, you can’t deny crying over that time Ash got turned into stone. The Pokémon Company will be launching remastered versions of the movies for the 20th anniversary. They’ll be available on iTunes, Google Play and Amazon Instant Video, and include Pokémon the First Movie, Pokémon the Movie 2000, and Pokémon the Movie 3. So if you want to revisit the first few legendaries and cry like a baby all over again, you can do so while watching the films in glorious HD!

We will also be getting a Nendoroid figure of Pokémon Trainer Red (Champion Ver.), available exclusively on Poké Keep an eye out for the celebration of Pokémon in a Super Bowl commercial this coming February 7th, too!

A few celebrities have also come out to share their love for Pokémon. Check out the videos below!
