When I found out back in 2013 that a game called Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem (now called Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE) was in development I was incredibly excited. This Wii U exclusive takes 2 franchises to the next level and received great reviews after its Japanese release in 2015.
I love both the Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei series of games; in fact, I have played every US release for a Fire Emblem title to date and have played my fair share of Shin Megami Tensei games (including the Persona series).
Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem is scheduled for a June 24th release date in both the United States and Europe so here is all you need to know to get yourself prepared for its release!
Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem will be similar to the Persona series, in that it is set in modern day Tokyo, where the city is being threatened by an alternate dimension called the Idolosphere. The Idolosphere is inhabited by Mirages, beings that seek to harvest Performa from humans (which enables humans to follow their dreams). You play as the main character Itsuki and his friends, as they come across friendly mirages by accident which then are recruited to the Fortuna Entertainment Agency who seeks to prevent invasions from the Idolosphere.
As you play, gameplay in Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem alternates between time in the real world (getting to know your friends and companions, buying from shops and progressing the storyline) and travelling through dungeons which unlock as the story progresses containing traps, switches, and puzzles which are required to complete the dungeon. Each dungeon has a specific theme and many of the puzzles and mechanics in each one are associated with said theme; you will take your party through the dungeon’s floors, killing enemies and making your way to the dungeon’s boss.
Battles in Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE are done in turn based fashion, where Itsuki and his allies merge with their Mirage allies into their “Carnage Forms” which represent various classes in Fire Emblem like Chrom’s swordsman class which merges with Itsuki. In battle you can attack, cast spells, heal HP and EP, or raise your party’s stats; The weapon triangle from Fire Emblem Fates comes into play in battle as well as the Elemental weaknesses from the Shin Megami Tensei series, making battles have a more strategic flair in finding the weaknesses of your enemies both in weapon weakness and elemental weakness.
Quests are returning from the Shin Megami Tensei series, where Itsuki and his friends can either complete main quests in order to progress the story or complete side quests that allow you to learn more about your allies while also unlocking new abilities for them. Some sort of weapon creation system will also be present, tied to a non-playable mirage named Tiki who will help the Mirage Masters progress on their journey.
After a long period of silence, it is exciting to know that Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE / Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem is coming to the US and Europe. In Japan, it was incredibly well-received at its launch back in December 2015, with Dengeki calling it a masterpiece and one of the “best recent RPGs” to release. We don’t have to wait much longer! Wii U owners will be able to grab Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE on June 24th, 2016.
