Top 5 Fun Video Games for Kids

With the gaming market overflowing with video games feeling like they’re being released every other day or so, it might be hard for parents to find fun video games for kids to play.

Left and right, kids are being lured into the ultra-violence of games like Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty, and understandably, not every parent is keen on raising their kids on that kind of thing so we created a list of 5 fun video games for kids to play.

Luckily, fun video games for kids are not that hard to find once you know where to look- and so, we thought we could help out a little and have compiled a list of 5 fun video games for kids.

  1. New Super Mario Bros. Wii / Wii U

What better way to encourage the value of cooperation and teamwork than by introducing your kids to wonder brothers Mario & Luigi? Cute cartoony platformer New Super Mario Bros. Wii is tons of fun with up to four players able to occupy the screen at one time. Players will have to work together to traverse the huge, colorful Mushroom Kingdom, which features more than 80 vibrant levels on the way to rescue the kidnapped Princess Peach. Older players will have reason to try it out too, because the classic coin-collecting, the baddie-bouncing action is still present and fresher than ever. The game is easy to get into, so kids will have no trouble getting in on the fun with older family members without feeling left out. New Super Mario Bros is available for the Wii but there is also a newer version on the Wii U.

  1. The LittleBigPlanet series

LittleBigPlanet’s hero Sackboy has become something of a PlayStation icon and for good reason: his design is not only cutesy, but not overbearingly so, but it’s also completely customizable! Kids will have a field day with this side-scrolling platformer, using their custom sack character and their special powers to overcome obstacles. There is also a game-creating kit for the more artistically-inclined young’un. What’s more, kids are able to play with friends and family online or on the same console- great for encouraging socialization and cooperativeness. Parents might want to keep an eye when exploring the online community with younger kids, though, to be safe. Otherwise, this puzzle game is definitely one of the best fun video games for kids to dig into and a lovely way to nourish creativity and problem-solving skills. LittleBigPlanet is available on the PS3 and PS4.

  1. Kinect Sports

ESRB Rating: Everyone 10+

Microsoft’s sports game is sure to foster any hyper kid’s penchant for being active, or coax it out for the softer ones. Kids get to mimic real-life star athletes and choose from a large set of sports games, including bowling, soccer, sprinting and volleyball, all of which are playable via the Xbox’s Kinect motion tracking feature. It is good for what it is, though! However, parents might want to clear out a relatively big space come playtime, as there is a lot of moving and general thrashing about involved. Despite this being a fun video game for kids, it should also be noted that the game is only playable with the Xbox 360 Kinect peripheral. Available on the Xbox 360.

  1. Disney Infinity

I haven’t met a kid who doesn’t love Disney. There is pretty much a Disney character for just about anyone, and a lot of them are present in Disney Infinity. Kids get to pick characters to use from the likes of Monsters Inc., Frozen, and even live action stuff like Pirates of the Caribbean and Star Wars. New playable characters are still being added to an already impressive roster up, with the newest addition being The Jungle Book’s resident bear Baloo. There are two modes to romp in: Play Sets, where you get to relive experiences in Disney worlds, and Toy Box, where kids can put all collected character, vehicles and settings to do virtually whatever they want. Available on Wii U, Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS, iOS and PC.

They’re amazing, the things this game is capable of doing. Kids will get to explore a ton of vibrant locales as hero Maxwell, using his magic book to solve puzzles. Scribblenauts Unlimited encourages kids to be inventive and resourceful, and not to mention good spellers with a great vocabulary, to get Maxwell out of the sticky situations he finds himself in by thinking of words to type into his magic book. Said words pop up in-game, ready to be used as players see fit. 5th Cell’s cutesy, wonderfully bright and colorful puzzle game truly pushes the envelope when it comes to nurturing your little ones’ imagination. The sky is the limit! Scribblenauts Unlimited completes our list for fun video games for kids and is available on the Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, PC, iOS, and Android. The game is PEGI 12, so it’s the perfect creative tool for 12-year-olds and above.
